Every day, saliva carries millions of microorganisms into the digestive tract. When oral hygiene is neglected, experts believe it may influence the microbial environment farther down the digestive system — a growing area of research connecting oral health and gut health more closely than previously thought.
Beneficial gut bacteria run on fuel, and one of their favorite sources is dietary fiber — vegetables, fruits, legumes, oats, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. When bacteria ferment fiber, they produce compounds that help maintain the intestinal lining. Many Western diets fall well short of recommended fiber intake.
Improving gut health rarely depends on one dramatic change. Instead, simple daily habits support microbial diversity over time: eating a wide variety of colorful plant foods, including fiber regularly, staying active, prioritizing sleep, managing stress, practicing good oral hygiene, and limiting unnecessary processed foods. None of these transform the microbiome overnight, but together they create an environment where beneficial bacteria are more likely to thrive.
