A landmark 2021 study in the journal Science analyzed energy expenditure in more than 6,400 people across 29 countries, from 8 days old to 95 years old. It found that metabolism remains remarkably stable through most of adulthood — roughly ages 20 to 60 — and only begins to decline after 60.

Fat tissue itself isn't just storage — it's an active endocrine organ that signals to the brain and other organs. Inside nearly every cell, mitochondria convert nutrients into usable energy, and how that function changes with age, activity, and nutrition remains an active area of research.
One of the biggest myths online is that metabolism depends on one secret hormone or miracle ingredient. In reality, it's the result of dozens of interconnected systems — age, genetics, sleep, muscle mass, daily movement, nutrition, liver function, mitochondrial health, hormones, and stress all contribute. That's why two people the same age, eating similarly, can see very different results.
The encouraging part: metabolism responds to behaviors you can actually change. Strength training preserves muscle. Daily walking increases total energy expenditure. Sleep supports recovery. Enough protein and fiber promotes fullness. None of these work overnight, but together they support the body's energy systems far more effectively than chasing a quick fix.
Your metabolism probably hasn't stopped working — it's adapted to years of changes in activity, muscle, sleep, and routine. Understanding that shifts the question from "what's broken" to "what's changed," which is a far more useful place to start.
